Simmer Down Sound 4 Year Anniversary Party

Every Second Saturday, Akasha presents Simmer Down Sound, one of Chicago’s most diverse and unique reggae and dancehall scenes. We want to large up all of the people who came out to see Fada Dougou andthe drastics and Moa Anbessa Sound System for their eighteen-year reunion! The vibes were massive. It was definitely one of the best Simmer Down Sound sessions.

On Saturday, June 11th at Double Door‘s Door No. 3 we continue the vibes as we celebrate Simmer Down Sound’s Four Year Anniversary! Simmer Down Sound was founded by Akasha’s Cosmos Ray to celebrate the amazing musical legacy of Jamaica. The original concept was based on the ska anthem “Simmer Down” by The Wailers. In that song, Bob Marley’s lyrics encourage the Kingston youth to “simmer down” before committing violence and destruction. In this spirit, we encourage people of all backgrounds to put aside their differences and to congregate, relax and connect around the music at Simmer Down Sound.

Simmer Down Sound began with a year of Simmer Down Sundays, followed by a hiatus due to construction at Door No. 3. We returned with three months of Thursdays before rooting ourselves on the second Saturday of the month. Today’s edition of Simmer Down Sound features resident selectors The Graduate, Rad Brian and MarcusIyah! The house band is The Mighty Akasha Crew. We bring you some of Chicago’s best bands and selectors every month and on occasion we also bring you international acts as well as legends like Johnny Osbourne, Charley Organaire and Carlton Livingston.

Simmer Down Sound selection is strictly vinyl and always royal! We bring you reggae and dancehall anthems from the foundation riddims of rocksteady to the big tunes of dancehall!
