Every Second Saturday, Akasha presents Simmer Down Sound, one of Chicago’s most diverse and unique reggae and dancehall scenes.

Saturday October 8th we are extremely excited to bring you a night celebrating the late great Peter Tosh and the 40th anniversary of his seminal album Legalize It!

“From the revolutionary title song to its bold album jacket, Peter Tosh made a statement with Legalize It, his landmark debut album which was released in the United States 40 years ago today.

Distributed by Columbia Records, Legalize It was a sensational call for global legalisation of ganja. It is regarded as one of the great protest albums and the fiery Tosh’s signature work.”

This tribute to Tosh and a plant which continues to heal all types of ailments, will feature a live performance by Heavyweight Dub and some special guest vocalists! In April of 2013, Heavyweight Dub joined forces with legendary Jamaican engineer and Dub pioneer Hopeton O. Brown, AKA “The Scientist”. After a serious phone discussion about music, The Scientist flew from L.A. to Chicago, where the band recorded their debut album with the “Dub Chemist” at the controls. The resulting musical document, “The Scientist Meets Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub” was released in September 2013 on Sirota’s own Liberated Zone Records, and began turning Dub heads around the globe. Since that time Heavyweight Dub has continued to blaze a trail for dub music on the Chicago reggae scene. Do not miss their tribute to Peter Tosh!
